Gig Harbor native son, Arthur “Art” Johnston, beloved husband and father died peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, October 16, 2016. He was 89 years old. Art was born on October 11, 1927 to Herbert and Mabel Johnston. He grew up on the shores of Gig Harbor, Washington.
After graduating from Gig Harbor High School, Art served one year in the military and then attended Washington State University. He graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering. In his senior year at WSU, he met and married Carol. Art and Carol were blessed to have 65 happy years together.
Art’s career began with jobs in the Navy Department, Alcoa and Hooker Chemical. In 1953 Art joined Borden Chemical. He worked for Borden in a variety of positions, from the lab, to management of several chemical plants and eventually as Director of Operations in 1993 when he retired.
Upon retirement, Art and Carol moved to a golf course community in Port Orchard. They enjoyed golfing, cruising the world, “snow birding” in the fifth wheel, and spending time with their immediate and extended family.
Art is survived by his wife Carol, 4 children, 5 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, his sister and brother and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, October 26th at Peninsula Lutheran Church in Gig Harbor.
