Dorothy H. Winship

1925-2017

Dorothy “Dee” Winship was born in Springs, East Hampton, Long Island, NY on June 11, 1925 to Lee Owen and Mary Esther Sanford Hench. She attended New York University and worked as a layout artist for The Sun newspaper during WWII. In 1946, she married LTC Roger Winship after a courtship that began when she answered a magazine ad suggesting she “write to a serviceman.” Together, Dee and Roger raised four children at their homes in New Jersey, Michigan, and Renton, WA. In the 1970s Dee launched a new career in social services, managing a 30-agency multi-service center for United Way of King County, training as a civic leader in the second class of Leadership Tomorrow, and serving as executive assistant at Youth Eastside Services. In retirement, she arranged flowers at Valley Medical Center, joined the Fairwood Garden Club and the P.E.O. Sisterhood, served as an elder at Kent First Presbyterian Church, visited with dear friends, traveled widely, presided over family feasts, and enjoyed views of The Mountain from her beach house on Puget Sound. She is lovingly remembered by her sister, Marietta (Leonard) Spearman; her children, Robert Winship (Mary Gorjance); Roxanne Winship; Scott (Karla Wallerich) Winship; Shelley Winship (Doug Clark); and grandsons Luke Gorjance Winship, Jens Winship, Joel Winship, and Will Clark. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 15 at 1:30 p.m. at Fauntleroy Church, UCC, 9140 California Ave SW, Seattle, with a private family burial to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to King County Sexual Assault Resource Center, United Way of King County, or Fauntleroy Church.
