Richard Marvin Peterson

Richard “Marv” Peterson, passed away on May 16th at his home in Gig Harbor surrounded by his family.  He was born and raised in Gig Harbor, the middle of 13 children.  Marv was a commercial fisherman, served in the Army during the Korean war and attended the University of WA.   He then met and married the love of his life, Shirley and went to work for Pacific Northwest Bell for 36 years.    Marv loved spending time with his family and friends, fishing, the outdoors and helping others.  He was an accomplished acanthus carver.  Marv was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, the Normanna Male Chorus, Sons of Norway, a Docent at the Harbor History Museum, a volunteer at the Scandinavian Cultural Center at PLU, and Nordlandslaget.  Marv is survived by his wife Shirley of 62 years, daughter Lisa Helling (Mark), son Mike Peterson (Carrie) and son Tom Peterson (Shannon), 7 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.  A Celebration of Life will be June 1, at 1:00 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church by the Narrows, Tacoma.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Harbor History Museum or Foss Seaport Museum.  Please sign the online guest book at: frontdest@havenrest.com
