Sandra Faith Schroeder, known as Sandy, was born June 13, 1934 in Tyrone, Pennsylvania. She had 2 younger sisters and a brother. At the age of 15, Sandy asked Jesus to be her Savior when her mother shared with her the plan of salvation. Sandy loved flowers, going to movies, reading, and especially reading God’s Word. She is well known for her radiant smile and gentle spirit.
After graduating from high school in 1952, Sandy followed God’s calling to study at Theologue Practical Bible School (known today as Davis College) in New York. Upon graduating from Bible school in 1955, she travelled to southern Kentucky to study missionary dentistry. During dentistry training, Sandy met Dr. John McLean who invited her to assist him in his mission hospital on Vancouver Island, thousands of miles from anywhere she had ever known.
Not long after settling in at Esperanza on Vancouver Island, Sandy met her sweetie, John P. Schroeder Jr., at an evangelistic meeting in Tahsis. They were married on June 7, 1958 in Lake Bay, Washington.
Sandy and John had 6 children. Their first son, John, was born in Tacoma. They felt called to return to Vancouver Island to be missionaries in Tahsis, B.C. Faith, David, Matthew, Steve and Marion were all born at the little mission hospital in Esperanza (8 long miles by boat from Tahsis). Sandy and John eventually moved from Tahsis to Vaughn to raise their 6 children.
Sandy said good-bye to her sweetie of 44 years in 2002. Not long after, she moved in with her son John and has resided in the Tacoma/Lakewood area until her death. She is survived by 5 of her children, 20 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Sandy’s memory to the Tacoma Rescue Mission.
