Sarah M Hageness

Sarah was born April 22, 1927, in Colfax, North Dakota, fifth child of Alpha (Boe) Aune and Michael Aune. She lived on the home farm with her parents in the Red River Valley in N. Dakota, until at age 18, in 1945, she moved to Washington State. She attended Eagle #6 Elementary school, Agassiz Jr. high school in Fargo, Wahpeton, N. Dakota and Knapps Business College in Tacoma, Wa.

Sarah married Paul Michael McFarland on December 23, 1946. They had three children: Paulette age 11, Daniel age 9, and Brian Paul age 1. Her husband, Paul, died on May 27, 1959.

Sarah married T. Olai Hageness on June 18, 1960. She adopted Olai’s two children: Linda and Donald, ages 14 and 12. Olai adopted Sarah’s three children. Sarah and Olai made their home in Lakewood, until June, 1975, when they built a home and moved to Wollochet Bay in Gig Harbor. Olai went to be with the Lord March 15, 2011. Sarah says that she knows that she will be with Jesus in Heaven and that she and Olai will be together again.

Sarah was employed at McNeil Island Federal Penitentiary as Secretary in 1945 and 1946. She worked for the American Red Cross, Field Office, at Ft. Lewis for 7 years from 1950-1957 as Secretary, then Bookkeeper, then Field Office Assistant.

Sarah was a Charter member of Lakewood Christian Women’s Club and served on the Board in various capacities; she was on the Church Council at St. John’s Lutheran Church and Lake City Community Church; served on the Deaconess Board, sang with the Church choirs from age 16 on. She was also a Board Member of the Tacoma Chapter, American Red Cross. She was a Member of Harbor Covenant Church, Gig Harbor, Wa. She was mainly a wife, mother and homemaker-God’s highest calling for her.

Sarah has been a resident of Harbor Place Retirement Center for the last 3 years. She was preceded in death by Paul McFarland, her first husband, by Olai Hageness, her second husband, and by Linda Straley, her daughter. She is survived by Don Hageness, Paulette McFarland, Dan Hageness and Brian Paul Hageness. Sarah leaves behind 11 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to the American Cancer Society. There will be a viewing at Haven of Rest, in Gig Harbor, on Friday January 6, from 9:00 am to 4:30pm. The memorial service will be on Saturday January 7, at 2:00 pm, at Harbor Covenant Church. Please sign her guest book on this page where you can also light a candle and leave messages or condolences for the family.
