Arlan Coulter Obituary

Arlan B. Coulter, 74, passed away in Gig Harbor, WA on May 19, 2018. He was a resident of Fox Island, WA for 15 years. Arlan was born in 1944 in Chicago to Monroe and Fannie Coulter. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Donna M. Coulter, and his daughter, Ashley Coulter.

Arlan spent his early years in various locations – San Bernadino, CA; Colorado Springs CO; and Rome, NY. He attended the University of Maryland and returned to the Midwest to earn a BA in Psychology from Carthage College in Wisconsin. He worked his entire career in Information Technology as a Systems Analyst in the Chicago area. Retirement brought him to the Pacific NW in 2002 with his wife and daughter. He and Donna decided this area of the country was where they wanted to spend their golden years.

Arlan had several interests and pastimes. Being near water always gave him pleasure. He enjoyed baseball, having played in high school in Rome, NY. Music relaxed him. He was an avid pinochle player and was hard to beat.  He delighted in watching irreverent comedic TV like “The Honeymooners,” “Married with Children,” and Marx Brother’s movies. In his younger years, he really liked to cook, and he followed programs such as “Iron Chef” and “Chopped.” Model Railroading was his favorite hobby. He attended many auctions and national conventions and belonged to the N Scale National Organization. He had two very impressive N Scale layouts which were featured in 2011 in the magazine “N Scale Enthusiast.”

Arlan was a person of integrity. He had very high standards and expected the best from everyone. He was a perfectionist who pursued every project with a tenacity that was unwavering. He was a fighter who could not tolerate injustice. He was a very sensitive soul who relished beautiful things. He had an eye for decorating and surrounded himself with artwork and collectibles. His home was his castle. Each house he lived in was custom built according to his specifications. His latest dream project was to design and build a one story open concept house on a beautiful view property overlooking Vashon Island. His spirit will be there.
