Liz went to be with her late husband, Tom, and Lord March 12, 2018, at age 92. The longtime Fox Island resident loved beauty, music and family. The first of three children of Norma and Emil Barta, she was born July 6, 1925, and grew up in Lakewood. Happy memories included swimming across American Lake, attending the Little Brown Church and spending time with her mother’s pioneer Byrd family.
After graduating from Bellingham High, she worked for the telephone company in Seattle, where she met Army Air Corpsman Tom Lockett. They married in 1944, but soon were separated by his wartime service. Upon his return, they settled in Tom’s native Southern California, where their two daughters were born. They moved to the Northwest in 1961, where she continued to enjoy singing, swimming, horseback riding and volunteer work, including greeting for Bible Study Fellowship and Tacoma General Hospital. She sang in the Harbor Covenant Church choir and co-hosted the Bible study that led to founding of the Fox Island Missionary Alliance Church.
Her 71-year marriage ended with Tom’s death in 2016. Liz is survived by her daughters Sue (Al) John and Cindy (Joe) Dille; three grandchildren Sara Jo (Joe) Pietraszweski, Tom (Meghann) John, and Melinda (Philip) Nielsen and seven great-grandchildren (Magdalene, Edmund, Hugh, Agnes, Therese and Marie Nielsen; and Mia Anne John), and Brother Richard Barta of Olympia. She is predeceased by her brother John Barta.
Special thanks to friends Rich & Glenda Peterson; Terri McPherson and the other wonderful women who cared for Liz at home; the Family First Rosedale staff and Multi Care Hospice. Memorial plans will be announced. Donations to a charity of your choice.
