Carla Hunter Obituary

Carla Hunter of Olalla, WA passed away peacefully on December 28, 2023 at Franciscan Hospice House in University Place.
Carla was born on January 18th, 1942 to Lois & Carl Mertz on the family farm in Maynard, MN.  She was the second of six children, joining big sister Donna, followed by sister Jan, twins Ron & Bob, and brother Bill.
She moved to Washington at the age of eight, with the family settling in Tacoma in 1953.  Carla attended Tacoma Public Schools and was a member of the first graduating class of Woodrow Wilson High in 1959.
In 1960, she was married to Fred Langton at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Tacoma. In 1961, the young couple moved to Redwood City, CA where Fred took a teaching job.  It was here that Carla began her career as a school secretary.  Carla & Fred welcomed their first child, son Tom, in 1963 and daughter Kristin in 1965.  They returned to Tacoma in 1967, and the family was complete when son Jeffrey arrived in 1969. Carla & Fred’s union ended in 1984.
In the early ‘70s, Carla resumed her career as a school secretary in the Tacoma School District.  She enjoyed working in various locations throughout the district including Washington Elementary, Wilson and Foss High Schools, and in the year 2001 she retired from Stadium High School.  Shortly before her retirement, she was given paid time-off while the filming of the movie 10 Things I Hate About You was filmed in her office at Stadium.
In 1986, Carla met Tom Hunter, a ski buddy of her brother Ron’s. After a 7-year courtship, they were wed on February 12th, 1993.  Upon Tom’s retirement in 2007, they hit the road in their home on wheels, making many family camping trips throughout Washington & Oregon. Two of their favorite destinations were the sunny and warm Needles, CA & Pahrump, NV where they wintered for seven years.  Trips to Disneyland were also made with daughter Kristin & great-grandson Dominic.  In recent years, their adventures included Alaskan cruises.
Carla took great joy in family celebrations.  She never forgot a birthday and she delighted in giving her loved ones not just one, but two birthday cards each year – one being funny and the other serious.  Other joys of Carla’s included vacuuming (sometimes more than once a day!), holiday baking, and shopping.  She was one of QVC’s very best customers.  When you think of Carla, you will remember her laugh.  Carla loved to laugh, and she often said that laughter was the best medicine.
Carla will be missed by her loving husband Tom.  She is also survived by son Tom (Jan) Langton of Redmond (grandchildren Peter Langton, Kelsie Langton, Matthew Langton & step-grandsons Stigen Barker & Leif Barker), daughter Kristin Langton of University Place (great-grandson Dominic) and (grand-daughter Jessica Langton of MA, and great-grandchildren Kamille Bailey, Devin Bailey, Jessica Graham, Joi Graham & Kevin Graham), son Jeff (Jackie) Langton of Montana (grandchildren Alec (Claire) Langton (great-granddaughter Abigail) & Kaely Langton), step-daughter Lisa (David, decd) Almonte of Tacoma (grandchildren Gina Almonte & Nicolas Almonte), and step-daughter Lynn (Lane) Smith (grandchildren Allison Tuttle (great-granddaughter twins Ava & Brooklynn) & Eric Tuttle), and granddaughter Carlee (Peter) Rustemeyer (great-grandson Brooks).  She will also be missed by her large extended family.
Carla was preceded in death by father Carl (her namesake) in 1983 and mother Lois in 2005, brother, Bob, in 1996 and sister, Jan, in 2014.
A Celebration on Life will be held for Carla on what would have been her 82nd birthday, Thursday, January 18th at 11:00 am at the Haven of Rest Chapel, Gig Harbor.
