Dorothy Mary Stroh, also known as Dottie, a loving, giving and kindhearted mother and grandmother, peacefully passed on May 17th surrounded by her family. Her beautiful, warm smile, witty sense of humor, and friendly nature brought joy to everyone she met.
Dorothy was born January 16, 1922, in Stayton, Oregon to John & Grace Gehlen. The family moved to Toppenish, Washington where, as a teenager, she worked in the hometown movie theater. It was in Toppenish where she met and married Fred, who would be her husband of sixty-three years.
The couple moved to Bremerton, Washington where they both worked in the Naval Shipyard. They finally settled in Gig Harbor, Washington where they founded and built their first business together in 1950, Stroh’s Feed and Garden Supplies. Dorothy worked long, hard days in the feed store, and did the store bookkeeping at night, all while raising four kids.
Mom was a smart businesswoman and was proud of the accomplishments she and Dad made together. They also started a water company, a trucking company, and a farm in George, Washington. She had a very fulfilling life, enjoying time at horse shows with family and friends, watching sporting events, vacationing in Puerto Vallarta, and taking time to enjoy a good martini!
Dorothy’s kindness and generosity was felt in the community. She was a supporter of St. Anthony’s Hospital, the Boys and Girls Club, the Gig Harbor History Museum, the Food Backpack 4 Kids program, and St. Nicholas Catholic School.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Fred. She is survived by her four children, Rick Stroh (Rita), Carla Cyr (Paul), Lea Stroh, Laura Rothenberg (Kurt), 9 grandchildren, 18 greatgrandchildren, and 3 great, great grandchildren.
Mom, we have been truly blessed with many years of your love and laughter. Thank you for always being there for us. Rest in peace. We love you and miss you.
