**CELEBRATION DETAILS:

Canterwood Golf & Country Club, Gig Harbor, WA

From 2 - 5 p.m., we will be hosting a celebration with opportunities to remember Doug with stories, memories, anecdotes, and a nod to his life, fully lived. There will be food and drinks, so please join us or stop by to help raise a glass and toast him.

SCHEDULE:

2:00 p.m. – The Event Room

Hors d’ouevres, soft drinks and bar service

Visit the tent, which is Doug’s ‘Playground’ with some of his many hobbies displayed.  For those with children, be sure to check out the kids’ playground area here, too.

There will be a large screen with photos that will change on a slow loop.

Be sure to pick up a ‘Share a Memory” card so that you can write any special story, sentiment, or message, and hang it on the Memory Tree.

There is an adjacent outdoor terrace overlooking the golf course.  If the weather is cool, the firepits will be on.  There is patio seating on this fully-enclosed terrace, which is safe for kids.

PROGRAM:

Jad Dennis, Doug’s ‘co-pilot’ buddy, will emcee.  Storyteller and poet, Jad will start us off as we celebrate Doug.

Canterwood Net Call (without radios)

A 10-minute video highlighting Doug’s flying career.  This video really shows the planes, the flying experience, and the thrill of it.  He always reflected on how lucky he was to be a fighter pilot, as flying in the ‘Band of Brothers’ of the 144th Griffins was one of the highlights of his life.

Story explaining a certain “reference” to Doug that many of you are wondering about!

There will be opportunities for anyone who wants to share a story or anecdote about Doug.  There will be a podium, but also a wireless mic that can be passed around the room to those seated at tables.  This will be organic, with no pressure to say something unless you are so moved.  Of course, the more stories, the better!

With your help, I know that the day will be a meaningful and fun tribute to Doug. I think he would be happy to bring together so many people he knew and loved.

DOUG’S STORY

Douglas Ross Munday, 78, flew his last solo flight on January 13, 2024.

He was a retired Instructor Pilot with the United States Air Force and a fighter pilot with the California Air National Guard 194th Fighter Squadron, known as the Griffins.  Over his 28-year flying career, he flew the T-37 Tweety Bird, T-38 Talon, T-33 T-Bird, F-106 Delta Dart, F4 Phantom, and retired out of the F-16.

He loved having a very active life, squeezing two lifetimes of activities and accomplishments into one.  His interests were quite extensive, from model railroading to astrophotography to racecar driving.

He was born on September 11, 1945, in Fresno, California, to Ross Hanna Munday and Dolores Vivian Munday (nee Wright).  After attending Fresno High School and California State University of Fresno, he graduated in Industrial/Electrical Engineering.  Working at Duncan Ceramics in their Manufacturing and Marketing Departments, Doug designed and manufactured the kiln used for their hobby ceramics dealers.

Doug and Jean moved up to Shaver Lake, 5200 ’elevation in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, where he joined her in selling resort properties.  He loved these mountains, with their idyllic summers, sailing and fishing lakes, hiking and skiing in the High Country.

After moving to Gig Harbor, he managed the IT Department at Splyce, a company that designed theater ticketing and concession software for national companies.  When one of the company’s clients experienced people committing fraud with stolen credit cards, Doug worked tirelessly via technology to catch the bad guys – and he did!

Once ‘retired,’ he was most recently involved in Canterwood’s Emergency Planning and Preparedness (EPPC) efforts.  This included training 40+ residents to earn their FCC Ham Radio licenses.  As a result, there is a Canterwood Net each Monday evening at 6 p.m., when ‘hams’ check in via radios in order to hone their radio communication skills and discuss preparedness topics.

He was involved in the formation of The Canterwood Foundation, which benefits the local community, as well as serving with PEP-C, CCC, and CERT.  These are all community organizations that help neighbors prepare for emergencies and disasters.

Doug was particularly active in implementing the Map Your Neighborhood (MYN) program, sponsored by FEMA, which organizes neighbors into Blocks of 15 homes to more quickly address residents’ immediate needs in an emergency.

Doug is survived by his wife, Jean-Marie; two daughters, Kristine St. Martin and Karen Munday (spouse Shannon Axtell); and two grandsons, Matthew and Jasper.  Doug was predeceased by his brother, James Walter (sons Jimmie and Bryan).  Doug is also survived by an extended loving family, friends, neighbors and associates who came to know him well.

In Lieu of flowers, any of the following memorial gifts, should you be so inclined, would be a meaningful tribute:

Canterwood Foundation – A non-profit 501(c)(3) supporting local High School Scholarships, Food Backpacks for Kids, Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for the Canterwood Golf Course, used sports equipment for First Tee school children, the Emergency Preparedness Planning Committee (EPPC) for Canterwood, and Citizen Corps Council (CCC) disaster relief aid and equipment.

Seattle Children’s Hospital - Our dear friends’ 9-year-old grandson, Emerson, is undergoing treatment for leukemia; you might see him in an Amazon commercial with Michael Penix, Jr. (https://youtu.be/knGl6XtqH1o).  There is a wonderful program that Emerson’s and other youth’s parents say is making a big difference in their children’s quality of life.

Cat House on the Kings – A 12-acre cat (and dog) sanctuary and adoption center located on the Kings River in CA. Lynea Lattanzio tends to 700+ cats; two of the cats there adopted Doug and me.
