JAMES BERENDSEN passed away at his home in Gig Harbor on Saturday, June 16th. He was born August 6th, 1941, in Green Bay, WI where he married his high school sweetheart, Judy (Kaftan). After Jim finished serving as a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army, they moved to Southern California where they raised their two children and Jim worked in the printing industry. An avid boater, theatre-goer. story-teller and outdoorsman, he moved to Gig Harbor when he retired almost twenty years ago. Jim continued his passion for helping others through his Church (St. Nicholas) where he worked as a Stephen Minister, ministering to the terminally ill as well as the inmates at the local prison. After Judy passed prematurely in 2010 - Jim was fortunate enough to find a second chapter with Elizabeth Robinson of Gig Harbor. Along with Elizabeth, her daughter Emily and grandson Taylor, Jim is survived by his children Susan Lundeen (Gig Harbor) and Dan Berendsen (Los Angeles), son-in-law Kevin Brockman, as well as by his beloved granddaughters Evelyn and Georgia Lundeen.
A service will be held on Monday, June 25th at 10:00 am at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Gig Harbor. In lieu of flowers please think about making a donation in his name to to the Gig Harbor Kiwanis (gigharborkiwanis.org) or to the Minerva Scholarship Fund (minervagigharbor.org).
