Louise Irene Schweitzer (Griffin), 77, of Shelton and Enumclaw, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2020 after a courageous seven year battle with several cancers.
Lu, as she loved to be called, is survived by her husband of fifty six years, David Schweitzer; daughter, Stacey Gifford of Bonney Lake, WA; daughter, Candice & son-in-law Peter Bernadelli of Gig Harbor, WA; four grandchildren, Hannah, Zach, Grace and Madison; sister, Lou Ann Kite and nephew Jason Kite. Lu will also be missed by her numerous so-called “adopted” children and grandchildren that she loved as her own. Her favorite nick name of all time was “Grammy”.
Lu was born in Cottage Grove, Oregon on June 1, 1943 to Ward and Edna Griffin. Her childhood years were spent in Eugene, OR and she eventually graduated from Walla Walla High School in Walla Walla, WA. Immediately after graduating high school Lu left the small town for the big city of Seattle,WA. During Lu’s early years in Seattle she worked in the clerical pool at Boeing Co. as well as the architect company of the Space Needle. After marriage, Dave and Lu lived a short while just south of Seattle before eventually settling down in Enumclaw, WA to raise their two daughters. Lu’s twenty five plus years in Enumclaw was spent working for local businesses, including the Courier Herald, as an accounting specialist and entrepreneuring several small businesses with her husband Dave. She was well known in the community for always sharing her heart warming smile. In early 2000 Dave and Lu retired to the shores of South Puget Sound.
Those who knew Lu best will remember that she never went anywhere without her makeup on, her hair done, her jewelry perfectly placed and dressed to the nines. Even during times of great illness she would never let it show. Some of Lu’s favorite past times were playing in her greenhouse, painting with her grandkids, cooking and baking . She was known to have the most beautiful planters lining her deck where she could enjoy the south sound water views and watch “her” hummingbirds.
Her close friends, family and frequent visitors to “Lu’s Bay” would say that Lu was best known for her “hostess-with-the-mostest”, “the-more-the-merrier” and “enough food to feed an army” generosity. She never met a person that didn’t love her or her fresh from her beach, perfectly fried oysters. Lu’s passing is a great loss for her family, friends and the communities she blessed with her nurturing spirit.
The family will not be holding a service for her until they can celebrate her life in true “Lu” fashion sometime during the upcoming year. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers that you please consider donating to the Cure AHC foundation to support ongoing research in finding a cure for her grandson, Zach’s rare disease.
