Mavis Moore Obituary

Mavis Kathleen Helland Moore
May 24, 1933 ~ March 14, 2023
Our family matriarch is now in the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Mavis grew up just outside Whitefish, MT on a small farm. After graduating from Whitefish HS in 1951, she and a friend packed up and headed to the greater Seattle area to start her new life experiencing big city living. It wasn't long after arriving in Seattle that she met Jerry Moore at a friend's wedding rehearsal party. Then a short 3 months later they were engaged and on November 12, 1955 she returned to Whitefish to be married in her home church among family and friends. They would remain married just 3 months shy of 60 fulfilling and adventurous years together before Jerry's passing in August, 2015. Aside from a short stay relocating to New Orleans, when Jerry was called to work temporarily by the Boeing Company, it was in Renton where she and Jerry settled down to raise their children. When she was ready to expand and become employed, she chose a career in the accounting field. At the beginning of their retirement, they were both excited about building a home on Camano Island. Some years later, they made the decision that it was time to be closer to family and relocated to Gig Harbor. She would remain there for several years. She had that innate sense of timing to know precisely when to move on. She had always set her sight on moving into the Tacoma Lutheran Home as her final stop. It was here that she was allowed to live a fully independent life while moving even closer to her son, daughter and grandchildren.

Mavis was very dedicated to her faith and her beloved Lutheran Church. In all her relocating during her life she had always sought out a home church to serve, volunteer for various causes and to feel that needed closeness to God. She once said that my presence in church most Sundays is my 'therapy session' for how and what I do each day of my life. She believed it, lived by it and, of course, was blessed by doing so.

Mavis was also a very accomplished seamstress in all forms of this skill. All beautifully crafted, be it hand stitching projects to quilting. She enjoyed making these forms of art and gifting them to both family and friends.

Mavis was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Moore; brother, Ordean Helland and sister, Ruth Browder. She leaves behind her son Kim Moore (Marci); daughter Lisa Hood (Eric); grandchildren, Micah Jo, Jordan (Mary), and Mik Moore; Tyler and Dannielle Hood; great grandchildren, Maddison Hood and Koa Nishiyama; sister Carol (Harold) Lietz; sister-in-law Karen Moore Adair; and a host of nephews, nieces and very close friends.

Throughout her adventurous and very full life over these nearly 90 years, she had seen and lived through the days of milk and honey and, of course, the days of strife and resolve. Overall, she would not have had it any other way. Through faith, she was strong enough to have understood her purpose in it all while clinging onto her Lord to guide her to her final days. Mavis had spoken, just before her passing, how blessed she truly felt. While she was truly blessed, she too was a blessing to all she left behind.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Eliseo Senior Living Community's Game Room (Apartment Living Entrance), 1301 North Highlands Parkway., Tacoma, WA, on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at 2PM.
