Obituary

Michael M. Broun, 74, of  Port Orchard, WA passed away Saturday February 13, 2021 due to a fatal heart attack.  Mike’s constant welcoming presence and never ending love was admired by everyone who crossed his path.  Born in Portland Oregon on March 10th, 1946 and raised in Pendleton/Hermiston, Oregon, Mike grew up on a farm.  Some of his fondest memories as a child include participating in 4-H and riding in rodeos. He also loved to backpack into the mountains by horseback and camp.  One of his sister’s fondest memories is taking the train with Mike and their younger brother from Pendleton to Mississippi to spend the summer with family. Mike also enjoyed designing and building wood working projects from a young age and throughout adulthood.  Mike was a graduate of Pendleton High School in 1964. He went on to attend the University of Portland, was a member of the Sigma Tau Omega Fraternity, and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1971.  Mike was a Vietnam War Veteran who served in the Navy as a Radarman.

After graduating, he worked for the Army Core of Engineers in Portland, Oregon.  It was there he met the love of his life, Linda, the girl next door.  Mike later took on a Mechanical Engineering position at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, WA.  He and his bride, Linda, raised their 3 girls in Port Orchard, WA where they still reside.  In 2000, Mike retired from the shipyard and took on the adventure of substitute teaching for the South Kitsap School District for 10 years.  He thoroughly enjoyed teaching kids math and science.  Mike was also heavily involved in his church, St. John’s Episcopal Parish in Gig Harbor.  It was there that he took on various membership roles including serving on the Vestry, was a licensed Eucharistic Minister, and shuttled countless amounts of teens to and from church conferences on the weekends where he also loved to serve the youth.  Mike also prioritized the continual growth in his own faith by attending and serving in the Bible Study Fellowship Community for 20 years.  Mike and his wife enjoyed their retirement years together traveling the world and hiking the peaks of many mountains, zip lining through Costa Rica, chasing the wildlife in Africa, and enjoying the local wines during afternoon siestas wherever they were in the world.

Avid reader, hiker, beginning golfer, gym enthusiast, horse lover, and loved by cats, Mike is survived by his wife of 47 years- Linda, 3 daughters- Michelle, Tricia and Lisa, 3 grandchildren- Sam, Sophia, and Erin, sister Jacklyn, and brother Nicholas.  Mike is preceded in death by his parents- James and Evelyn, granddaughter- Rachel, and older brother- James Jr.
