Pamela Deacon-Joyner Obituary

Pamela Ann Deacon-Joyner, 72 years old, a resident of Grapeview, Washington went to be with God on December 13, 2020. She died of complications from lung cancer treatment.

Pam was born in Tacoma, Washington on January 27, 1948 and grew up in Fircrest, Washington. She graduated from Wilson High School in Tacoma in 1966 and earned a bachelor's degree in Religion with a minor in sociology from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma in 1999. She worked for the music department at PLU from 1994-2008 where she was administrative assistant to the department chair and Manager of Performance and Outreach. From 2008-2011, she worked as an academic adviser and career counselor at PLU. A certified mediator, Pam was Facilitative Mediation Coordinator at the Pierce County Center for Dispute Resolution and started her own business, Puget Sound Mediation. As a member of the Parkland-Spanaway Rotary Club, she acquired a $48,000 international grant to support Bellefonte Community College in Shillong, India in partnership with the Salasian Catholic order of nuns and the Shillong Rotary. In phased retirement from PLU (2011-2016) she was India consultant for Wang Center for Global Education. From 2013 until her death, she was a “red-badge” volunteer at the Washington Corrections Center in Shelton, Washington where she shared God’s love with the Living Stones Prison Congregation, sponsored by the Southwest Washington Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. She also visited the Intensive Management Unit at WCC and organized the clothing closet to serve released inmates. She enjoyed kayaking, playing Rummikub, watching the Seattle Seahawks and going to the rodeo.

Pam is survived by her husband David Deacon-Joyner, brother Robert Deacon and his wife Jennifer Deacon, daughter Angela Swinhart and her husband David Swinhart, son Aaron Hanson and his wife Stephanie Hanson, step-children Michelle Joyner, Fletch Joyner, Garrett Joyner, and Reed Joyner, grandchildren Taylor Wakefield and husband Stephen Wakefield, Chazlyn O’Bannon, Porter and Eli Hanson, and great-granddaughter Camilla Rose Wakefield.
