Vivienne Asplund Obituary

On April 13, 2024, at 99 years of age, Vivienne Edith (Bette) Asplund went to heaven to be with her Lord and Savior and her beloved husband of 76 years Eric Asplund. Bette was born in Republic, Washington on January 4, 1925.  Her family eventually moved to Kellogg, Idaho and then to Gig Harbor where she graduated from the original Gig Harbor High School class of 1943.  Bette and Eric met through her brother; she always said it was love at first sight. They were married July 31, 1943, at the parish house St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Gig Harbor.  Bette was an active member of FOE Auxiliary #2809 where she was the last surviving charter member. She had a passion for raising money for charities and serving in many capacities for the Eagles.  Bette was an avid league bowler for over 50 years. She was a housewife and stay at home mom until her children were grown, she then worked at Cottesmore nursing home for 16 years.

Bette was a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts, a Cub Scout den mother, a girls softball coach, a member of Tacoma Eagles #3 ladies drill team and talented seamstress. Given the nickname Bette as a child after the cartoon character Betty Boop she enjoyed collecting Betty Boop items where they were proudly displayed in Gig Harbor home. To her grandchildren she was fondly called Grandma Boop.

Bette is survived by her daughter Sandie Myers of Olympia, daughter Linda Ireland of Gig Harbor, daughter Tina (Terry) McGovern of Olympia, son K.O. (Val) Asplund of Mesa Arizona, 10 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.

Bette was preceded in death by her husband Eric O. Asplund, parents Winona L. (Rowley) and Perry T. Valley, three brothers David, Richard and John, two sisters Barbara and Beverly.

A private graveside service will be held at Haven of Rest. Pallbearers: Grandsons Shawn Myers, Spencer Asplund and Christian Asplund, Great-Grandsons Tristin Thomas, Logan Ridgeway, Orion Thomas, and Justin Envolsen; Honorary Pallbearers: Jacob Beckley, Seth Asplund, and Noah Gabel.

A celebration of life will be held at Gig Harbor Eagles (4425 Burnham Dr. Gig Harbor, WA) on June 8, 2024 at 1pm. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Gig Harbor F.O.E. Auxiliary #2809 to be donated to the heart fund in Bette’s name.
