Dave,

This month I accomplished a life goal of mine. I credit you for that accomplishment. You pushed me far more than anyone I have ever known. You challenged me in every idea and thought and forced me to think different. You mentored me, guided me and was a friend to me when others didn't see the potential and value. We disagreed often; but I like to think those conversations helped us both to grow in our thoughts and ideas.

Thank You; Thank You; THANK YOU My Friend!

This will be my last post here;

But do know - Every day of my life I will remember you and what I Learned - Just to have known you.

A Friend Forever!

I miss your friendship, advice and wisdom. I miss your laughter.
The friendship I try to pay forward as well as advice and wisdom I have accumulated over the years of my life.

Your laugh and laughter - hard to recreate; I miss that often.

What I miss of David - humor, his laugh, kindness, love, memories, wisdom without judgement.

I find that cannot yet accept that he is gone, for it was too soon, and I hadn't said goodbye. Each day I remember another day with David - in Mill Valley, in Longview, riding our bicycles, making stories, playing. He taught me to create not just stuff that was useful, but things just for fun! The winds of life took him from me and my life in Longview, blowing him to CA, Portland, Costa Rica, and across the USA. Our lives crossed like the silver moon and a silent solo cloud - always a special moment and full. Miles and years apart, but immediate and warming. He is above me always, floating in the silent sky, with a hearty laugh and love. Blessed.

John, you were an important part of Davids and mine childhood. I'm so grateful to you for being that faithful "best friend" to my beloved brother.

February 2, 2016 2:39 PM

We at Reynolda Rotary in Winston-Salem, NC learned of David's death this week and were shocked! He had such a positive spirit. We hated to see him move to the West Coast and hated even more to hear of his untimely passing. He contributed a lot to our group, including being our webmaster. One of the last things he did before moving was to bring in two gentlemen to speak about fly fishing and their roles in assisting wounded military vets with their PTSD. A wounded vet gave a moving testimonial as to the benefits of their program. I did know well his extensive world travels for his job. I would quiz him as to where he had been recently and was always floored by the distances, the frequency and the upbeat, positive manner in which he spoke of his travels. Life was an adventure for David. I did not know of his deep faith as described in the excellent obituary, but am not surprised given his wonderful disposition. We will miss him. My condolences to all of his family

As a member of the Reynolda Rotary Club, I join others in expressing my sincere condolences as we remember David and the wonderful service he rendered to our club. Our hearts are saddened, but his joy is now fulfilled. We are grateful for his gifts, his dedication, and the light he reflected. I appreciate so much the wonderful way your family memorialized him in the obituary. What a testimony of his love for people, nature, family, and God. May you be strengthened and comforted by your memories, and may you rest in the glow of his life that was lived so fully, so richly, and so freely.

This is the most beautiful and meaningful obituary I think I have ever read. You all captured the essence of what is truly important - Dave's love of God, family, fishing, and the myriad of lives he touched. A life well lived indeed. I knew Dave from Rotary. My heart goes out to you all. What a tragic loss and what a shock for you all. Dave left you with so many wonderful memories and for those I know you are so grateful.

Dave lived the true meaning of Rotary- Service Above Self. He was instrumental in an international grants project which makes a huge difference to the education of girls in India. Dave brought ideas and enthusiasm to Reynolda Rotary. He was not only our webmaster but a dedicated servant and friend to the club membership. It was our pleasure to meet and hear about his family whom he loved so much. He has been missed since his move and will continue to be.

Our prayers and thoughts are with you.

I am so sad to hear of this. I just heard about it yesterday and it makes me feel devastated. I knew David from HbI when I worked with him several years ago. He was such an interesting human being. Like his obituary stated, he touched so many lives. I value everything I learned from him in those years. I always enjoyed his comments about his daughters and how proud he was of them. I am positive he will be missed in so many places. His presence though will be here forever in all the hearts he touched. The obituary you wrote for him was a clear indication of his legacy. I loved reading it- I was deeply touched by it. May god give you all the strength needed for these difficult times. God bless- Mario

I was shocked and saddend by David's sudden passing this past week. David was my good friend and colleague at Hanes for the past 20 years, having met while he was based in Costa Rica and continuing here in Winston-Salem. He was brilliant and passionate about learning and leadership development, and saw the world as a classroom.
My thoughts and prayres are with you at this difficult time. David will be missed.

Elena, I am SO sorry for your loss. I am proud to say that I knew David. He was a wonderful friend to me and Brian. He was so patient and kind to Jonathan. We always had a great time with you both...his presence will be greatly missed. David lived a life of love-not only for his family, but for the God he served. He was a man whose faith was strong and trusted God for all things...from moving, to job changes, to house choices, and most of all for the healing of those who were sick. He always encouraged people to try new things and to better themselves. He had a lot to offer anyone who crossed his path. Elena, I know you will miss him more than words can express. His time on this earth is no longer...but he not be forgotten. Love and many prayers for you and your family during this difficult season in your life.

Elena, I am really saddened by the terrible news! I can never forget David's smiles and the day when you watched our kids. It was such a fun day for them, though I knew it was very exhausting for you, as even your dogs slept right after our kids left. When we picked up our kids, exhausted as he was, there was a big smile on his face. He will be missed by us. I will keep my prayers for you and your family!

David was a great professional, mentor, and friend. I met Dave though our training association, ATD where he later became an officer and peer. He was always gracious with his time and his wisdom, helping me improve my skills. We both sat for an exam together on a credential we spent over a year working on. He had so much more experience than me and used that to mentor me for which I'll always be grateful. I'll carry fond memories of David. Our hearts are with your family and close friends as you say goodbye to a kind and gifted man.

I worked with Dave in HR at Hanesbrands. I only knew Dave in passing because we worked on different teams but once I joined our company Toastmasters club, Hanes T-Masters, I had the wonderful opportunity to "really get to know Dave!" His zest for life and immense love for his wife, daughters, fly fishing, traveling, and AMAZING stories impacted me in many, many ways. When I competed in my first area Toastmasters contest, Dave came on a Saturday to support me! He was a charter member and co-visionary to start our Toastmasters club and served faithfully as an officer until his retirement. Yesterday during our club meeting, we held a moment of silence in honor of Dave. We shared stories of the impact he had on us and he will forever live on in our hearts. I send my sincerest prayers and condolences to the Richards' family! You were a blessed family to have such a great guy amongst you and thank you for sharing him with us. May the many great memories and stories he shared be the wind beneath your wings. I will continue to pray for peace, comfort and strength. God Bless You All!

Our deep condolences, prayers, and love go out the Richards family. David's passing is a great loss for the whole family and the many souls he touched while here on Earth. I have a special fondness for the Richards family because they adopted me when I was a very young man attending University of Western States from 1973-1976. I knew David for his teenage years ages 14-18. He was kind, sweet and quite masculine all at the same time. Few men can achieve that wonderful balance at any age...the evidence of a mature soul here to uplift others with kindness, strength and inspiration. Having recently moved back to Southern Oregon, I was looking forward to seeing David once again but perhaps we will do so on the other side of the thin veil that partitions the various planes of existence. Steph and I are sending much love to Shaffia, Ann Marie, Mark, John, and Gail and David's wife and children. May you all be blessed with sweet memories of a very special soul.

I had known David from the time I joined HBI in Asia in 2010. I still remember spending time with him on my 1st visit to Winston Salem, a passionate Learning & Development professional indeed. It was from him that I learned about fly fishing as it's not something we do in Asia. We also found something we share in common i.e. Rotary!!!.

My colleagues from HBI Nanjing, China have very fond memories of David as he was their host during their early days for thier training at NC State and at HBI WS. For most of them, it was their 1st visit to America and induction to everything American. When David realized that they missed home-cooked food, he opened his house and kitchen so that they can cook and enjoy Chinese dishes. David's generosity is remembered with much fondness by them and I am sure all of them are saddened ob hearing the news of David's sudden demise.

Our hearfelt condolence goes to his family!!!!

I worked with David for several years and he was a very funny guy who had a fish called Tarter Sauce and I will never forget that he left us in charge of Tarter Sauce while he was traveling to Central America. Unfortunately, the fish did not survive but he never let us forget Tarter Sauce! He always made a very sad face when he would mention Tarter Sauce.. David was always making you strive to be better in your job. He loved fishing and my husband and I usually fished at the coast and he was always very interested in what we fished for so I am sure he will be fishing in heaven. We are all in shock and disbelief.
