David Jay Richards

December 17, 1959 to January 22, 2016

David Jay Richards—husband, father, brother, son, fisher, genius, comedian, world traveler, mentor, toastmaster, and the best BBQ master on the planet—died on Friday, January 22, 2016 in Gig Harbor, Washington.

David’s work here on Earth was done. He received a call with the type of offer that you can’t refuse. His new appointment comes with an incomparable sign-on bonus that includes a brand new, perfect body and an eternal stress- and pain-free environment. Job security is over 100 percent. David’s new mission includes doing what he does best: talking to God, fishing in pristine waters where the fish really are “that big,” singing, and watching over his family. Love and comfort are guaranteed.

David’s family and friends want to let him know that he did an extraordinary job. He was the epitome of a life well lived. David was born in Longview, Washington, graduated from Newberg High School in Oregon, and received a Master in Business Administration from George Fox University. In 1979, he married the first girl he ever fell in love with, Elena Jimenez de Richards, who followed him without abandon for over 36 years. David had two daughters, Flora and Crystal, to whom he gave the world—nothing less. He also gave them his smile. When you look at them and have the pleasure of knowing them, you’ll see the parts of David that carry on today. David also felt tremendous love for his sons-in-law, Kyle Gustafson and Michael Day. He thought of them as his own sons and felt proud to have these men in his life.

In addition to his wife and daughters, David is survived by his mother, Shaffia Richards (Oregon); sisters, Gayle Mace (Colorado) and Ann Marie Richards (Oregon); and brothers, Mark Richards (California) and John Richards (Florida). He preceded his brother, Grant Richards, and father, Roland Richards.

David impacted more lives than he’ll ever know and touched hearts with a depth that was greater than the profoundest sea. His brilliant stories were so colorful, engaging, and lively that those who listened to them became immediately immersed in his tales, as if they experienced the adventures in their own lives. David was a lifelong learner who had a talent for making the mundane fascinating. He devoted his life to God and worked tirelessly for his family. It was David’s joy to serve. The Lord’s joy and faithfulness were his strength.

One of David’s favorite Bible verses:

"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
-Jeremiah  29:11
